Heather MacKenzie
I am an artist and educator with a research-based and concept-driven practice founded in hand weaving. My research takes both theoretical and practical forms as I experiment with materials, processes, and loom technologies. Through the lens of the textile, in modes that include installation, performance, and writing, I investigate the material and abstract systems in which we participate. In my work, I seek to evoke tensions around ideas of abundance, logic, and value through the physical production and accumulated repetitive labor of weaving.
Narratives produced by anthropic systems are often central themes of my research. As a foundational piece and product of human technology, the textile is sensual and material while simultaneously embedded with systematic mathematical information. I draw parallels between the complex systems of woven structure and other wide-ranging but equally fundamental human systems that bridge the abstract and material worlds, such as platonic mathematics, the US petroleum industry, and standardized measurement.
I have acted as the Fountainhead Fellow at VCU, Fulbright Scholar in Paris, France, and artist-in-residence at MASS MoCA, Cité Internationale des Arts Paris, Ox-Bow, and ACRE. I have exhibited work recently at venues including Sediment Gallery in Richmond, VA, the Mission Gallery and Rhona Hoffman Gallery in Chicago, and PointDom in Toulouse, France. I received my BA from Brown University and my MFA in Fiber and Material Studies from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
